Strand Road to fully reopen today after months of traffic 'chaos'

Strand Road is to fully reopen today after months of traffic 'chaos'.

After several months of disruptive road works, the popular Sandymount route linking Ringsend to Merrion Gate is expected to be fully reopened. The works to replace 100-year-old water mains began in September 2022 and were expected to be completed in Spring of this year.

The final phase of the works along the Strand Road are expected to be completed later today. The right turn at Merrion Gates had been closed to facilitate the works but it is expected to reopen later today as the works are completed.

An update to councillors read: "Merrion Gates – the contractor for Irish Water has completed the works on Strand Road. From tomorrow (May 10) Dublin City Council will commence the work to reinstate the right turn at Merrion Gates to Strand road. This should be completed by the evening time."

The works had caused considerable consternation among residents of Sandymount as traffic from the popular routes was diverted through the village. One mother wrote to councillors that she was "spitting thumb tacks" with rage.

She wrote: "I have just returned from dropping my three small boys to school and I am close to tears... Since the waterworks began on Strand Road, the school drop off has become akin to a highly dangerous sport.

"We live on Tritonville Road, and the boys attend St Matthew's National School on Cranfield Place. We walk out the door in the morning to be met by a sea of car fumes as the traffic sits stationary in both directions outside the house."
