Strabane town centre to host Christmas lights switch-on

Santa Claus will lead a festive-themed procession through Strabane town centre to perform the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on this weekend.

He will be joined on the procession by chair of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Graham Warke.

The lights switch-on in the Co Tyrone town will be accompanied by a variety of entertainment for all the family.

Santa’s switch-on procession will consist of festive characters and bespoke Christmas-themed mobile installations from LUXE.

The event is part of the council’s Uncover the Magic of Christmas programme which includes the return of the Walled City Christmas Markets and the Mayor's Magical Christmas Experience in The Alley Theatre and Guildhall.

The Strabane switch-on procession will depart from Dock Street at 5pm and will make its way through the centre of the town before finishing back at Dock Street.

"I am delighted that we are able to welcome families back into Strabane town centre for the Christmas lights switch-ons this year." council chair Graham Warke said.

"I have spoken to our maintenance teams who have some exciting new lights installations planned and it will be a magical evening to see the town centres lit up for the first time.

"I will be accompanied by Santa and several walkabout festive characters for the procession as we leave the illuminated streets in our wake.”

To help generate maximum festive cheer there will be walk-about festive characters in Strabane town centre the afternoon before the procession as well as arts and crafts workshops in the Alley Theatre.

Tickets for the event are free and will be available to book at the Derry City and Strabane District Council website.

Although there will be no traditional lights switch-on in Omagh or Ennniskillen this year, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council's festive schedule will kick off from Saturday, November 20.

Meanwhile, in Mid Ulster the local council has opted for a virtual lights switch-on on Friday, November 26.
