A restaurant review in the Observer by Jay Rayner has upset the people of Stow-on-the-Wold. Rayner called Stow "completely and utterly ludicrous" and "a compendium of everything that is wrong about ersatz, up-itself, self-deluding, arthritic, rural Britain". The review initially prompted a letter from the Stow Business Association, which The Observer published. Now the mayor, Alan Rose, has written to the paper's magazine editor registering surprise that "The Observer - which I had always thought to be a responsible publication - could lower its sights to accept such drivel".
