Stosur and Ebden lose Open mixed doubles

Barbora Krejcikova and Rajeev Ram have made short work of home pairing Samantha Stosur and Matthew Ebden to take out the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open.

The Czech-American combination added to their 2019 victory at Melbourne Park with a 6-1 6-4 win in one hour.

Signs weren't good for the Australians when Ebden and Stosur were broken in their opening service games as Krejcikova and Ram comfortably held onto their own to set up a 4-0 lead.

Another break and hold by the visitors set up the first set after just 22 minutes.

The second set was much tighter.

The Australians went toe-to-toe with the more experienced team, staying on serve until 4-5.

But a loose service game from Ebden was enough to seal the trophy for Krejcikova and Ram, the Australian shooting a forehand wide after a long rally on match point.

Still, it was an excellent tournament for the local pairing who hadn't played together before the Open.

Stosur, the 2011 US Open singles champion, was a mixed winner with Scott Draper back in 2005 while Ebden had combined with Jarmila Gadjosova to take out the 2013 tournament.

It's been a busy grand slam for both Ram and Krejcikova,.

Ram teams up with Joe Salisbury on Sunday as they attempt to defend the men's doubles title against Filip Polasek and Ivan Dodig.

Krejcikova played alongside Katerina Siniakova as they went down to Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens in the women's event.
