Story of Liverpool's famous community bakery Homebaked is being turned into a musical

The story of much-loved Anfield bakery Homebaked is being turned into a stage musical at the Royal Court.

The show, written by Chumbawamba lead guitarist Boff Whalley, will tell the real life story of how the community came together to see off property developers and reclaim their homes and businesses.

Pauline Daniels has been confirmed as a cast member with others to be added soon. It will also star a choir made up of members of the Anfield community.

Back in 2012, a group of residents got together to save their neighbourhood bakery from demolition - and is now transforming the adjacent terrace into environmentally sustainable, quality homes and commercial spaces at affordable rents.

Meanwhile, Homebaked's pies have become famous across Liverpool with huge queues of football fans waiting to buy them on matchdays.

Boff Whalley said: "What I loved about making Homebaked into a musical comedy is that it's a good night out, and a way to feel inspired and positive.

"Music and laughter are so important to stories like this - changing the world one singalong chorus at a time. It's what we all need right now, that sense of feeling stronger together."

Rod Dixon, of theatre company Red Ladder, is directing the show Beccy Owen as musical director. He said: "This true-life story of locals standing up to save their community in Anfield is ripe for adapting into an uplifting new musical drama.

"The story behind the Homebaked bakery and Community Land Trust is incredibly inspiring - a real show of working-class resilience, pride and defiance and the power of people pulling together and refusing to bow down to bullies."

Homebaked - The Musical runs at the Royal Court from September 24 to October 23, 2021. Tickets start at £14 from here and meals are available before the show for an extra £12.
