Story of infamous hunt for killer Raoul Moat 'to be adapted for silver screen'

The dramatic story of the hunt for killer Raoul Moat is to be turned into a film.

Details of the ambitious project emerged on the 10th anniversary of his infamous deadly escapade.

Moat, 37, was on the run for seven days before he took his own life in a stand-off with armed police in Rothbury, Northumberland, on July 10, 2010.

He had shot and murdered Chris Brown, 29, the boyfriend of his ex-partner Sam Stobbart, 22, who he shot and wounded in Birtley, Gateshead.

He then shot and blinded PC David Rathband in the early hours of July 4, before he fled and went on the run.

It's been ten years since the manhunt for killer Raoul Moat (ITV)

Millions watched the ITV documentary Manhunt: The Raoul Moat Story on ITV this week.

Now, key figures involved in the programme have been approached to help with the film project.

A source said: “The story clearly has all the elements needed for an exciting drama.

"The manhunt went on for so long and became the biggest of its kind in British criminal history.”

Moat, a former nightclub bouncer, had links to organised crime gangs on Tyneside.

He made threats to kill police officers and members of the public in a series of phone calls.

The search for him called on officers from 18 forces and cost £1.4million.

RAF jets, survival expert Ray Mears and psychologists were called in.

At one point, troubled ex-football star Paul Gascoigne turned up claiming to know Moat and offering to bring him “chicken and lager.”
