Rare photo of great white shark breaching captured

A woman screaming “Get out of the water!” prompted Mike Lemery to grab his camera and be on the lookout for a great white shark.

Lemery and his fiancée Chrissy, on a short trip to Cape Cod, were on Head of the Meadow Beach over Labor Day weekend when things got exciting.

Returning with his camera, he asked the woman if she had seen a shark. She answered no but a man did. She was warning a lone swimmer about the shark.

“So I approached the man and he said he saw a shark fully breach the water with its whole body,” Lemery explained in a blog post he sent to USA Today/For The Win Outdoors, along with some photos. “He said he had been coming to Cape Cod for 10 years and has never seen a shark. He believed it was at least 10-12-feet long.”

Lemery began scanning the water with his camera. Chrissy alerted him to a fin and Lemery managed to get a photo of it. The excitement level dramatically ratcheted up. Then a sailboat came into view.

“Chrissy says, ‘I think I see something by the boat,’” Lemery continued. “So I swung my camera around to the boat in the distance and as I’m acquiring focus of the area, a great white shark jumps out of the water with the boat in the background. It was amazing and a once-in-a-lifetime shot!”

Lemery stated “there is something to be said about being in the right place at the right time [and] never was this more true than [in this instance].

“It was a one-in-a-million opportunity.”
