Bansky’s stab-proof vest worn by Stormzy at Glastonbury has been nominated for a major design award.
The item of clothing, which is emblazoned with a black and white Union Jack flag, is up for the Beazley Designs of the Year prize, the winner of which will be announced by London Design Museum in November.
The vest was worn by the “Vossi Bop” rapper during his record-breaking Pyramid Stage set at the 2019 music festival.
Stormzy was the first black solo British headliner at the festival. The item, designed to highlight structural racism in the UK, was made from a former police issue garment.
The Independent’s review at the time described Stormzy’s performance as a “pure, uncompromising set from an astonishingly versatile performer”.
Other nominated items from the realm of pop culture for the Beazley prize include the house from Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning film Parasite, as well as the de-aging technology used in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.
The sound design from TV series Chernobyl also received a nod, as well as a jigsaw made by satirical collage artist Cold War Steve and the TikTok dance Renegade.
The exhibition is on display at the Design Museum until 28 March 2021.
