Stormzy is launching a scholarship that will assist two black British students in going to Cambridge University.
The Stormzy Scholarship will pay the tuition fees of two students, something the rapper announced on A-level results day at his old school in south London.
This scheme will also provide a maintenance grant for a four-year undergraduate course for two students this year and another two in 2019.
“It's so important for black students, especially, to be aware that it can 100% be an option to attend a university of this calibre,” the rapper said.
Stormzy's plans come after Cambridge University was criticised for failing to admit any black pupils from 2012 to 2016 and just 58 in 2017.
“We're a minority, the playing ground isn't level for us and it's vital that all potential students are given the same opportunity,” Stormzy continued.
Applicants to this year's Stormzy Scholarship must be of black ethnicity and have an offer to study at the University of Cambridge. The deadline is 30 August with the two students later selected by a panel comprised of university staff.
For the 2019 scheme, pupils need to apply via UCAS by 15 October. The students will be selected from a list of applicants by a panel of university staff.
