Stormzy added his name to a weird and wonderful list of musicians to have worn Newcastle United shirts

Musicians wearing Newcastle United shirts. Good PR? Love Toon? Perhaps it's a bit of both. When Stormzy pulled on a 2005-06 Newcastle United shirt during his performance at the city's arena this week it sent ripples across social media.

Apparently the shirt was stuffed inside a 'Geordie starter pack' curated for Stormzy by promoter Mike Hesketh. The London-based rapper, whose real name is Michael, put aside his affection for Manchester United to pull on a replica Adidas shirt as worn by Alan Shearer in his final season as a player.

In doing so Stormzy joined an eclectic club of musicians who've performed the same ritual over the years.

Liam Gallagher

Oasis' second night at the Arena clashed with Newcastle's famous 3-2 win over Barcelona in the Champions League in 1997. Liam updated the crowd with the score during the gig and pulled on a long-sleeve shirt to toast the occasion.

One Direction

Harry, Liam, Louis and Niall were invited to the Newcastle United Training Centre by Alan Pardew for a kickabout just days before a vital Europa League game with Benfica in 2013. Newcastle lost the tie 4-2 on aggregate, then lost 3-0 at home to Sunderland three days after that!

Meatloaf

The Rock singer, who sadly died earlier this year, raised £5,000 for Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre and the Toma Fund in 2008 by auctioning an opportunity to take penalties against him on the pitch at St. James' Park. This was the singer's way of apologising for cutting short a gig in the city due to ill health. Peter Beardsley was one of the penalty takers who stepped up.

Mos Def
We've been unable to provide any context to this tweet of legendary New York rapper Mos Def wearing a 2000-01 Newcastle United away kit. The New York artist is rated as one of the world's greatest MCs and has influenced numerous high profile artists, from Kendrick Lamar to Amy Winehouse.

Shania Twain

Her name sounds great when pronounced in a strong Newcastle accent, and she became an honourary Mag during the encore of her February 2004 Newcastle Arena performance. Man! I feel like a Geordie.

Ed Sheeran

Not a great picture, and he loses points for covering the shirt with a massive jacket (which some would consider very un-Geordie), but here's Ed Sheeran, alongside Alan Shearer, in a 2015-16 Newcastle shirt at half-time of that season's home game with Chelsea.

Sam Fender

A regular wearer of the black and white, Fender is of course a genuine fan of the club and has worn Newcastle colours on many occasions, but perhaps the most famous was the morning after the takeover was confirmed when he rocked this splendid piece of retro training wear during his appearance on BBC Breakfast.

Sam Fender admitted he is "really, really hungover" during his BBC Breakfast appearance (BBC Breakfast)
