Storms cause thousands of starfish to be washed up on East Lothian beaches

The recent stormy weather has led to some rather sad sights on the coastline of East Lothian, as thousands of starfish have washed up dead.

Several people have shared photos of the marine animals on the beaches in recent weeks.

Storm Ciara led to quite a few washing up on Yellowcraig beach near North Berwick.

East Lothian Council's countryside rangers said similar shoreline deaths - known as 'strandings' - have taken place around the UK.

They said earlier: "One of the effects of Storm Ciara. A few hundred starfish washed up on the beach at Yellowcraig.

"These strandings are not uncommon, having occurred along beaches around the UK at different times."

One person commented saying: "Oh no, I didn’t realise they were all dead. So sad."

William Kyle posted a picture saying "Looked like many hundreds sadly."

A similar incident took place on Portobello beach in January 2018, with thousands of the marine invertebrates stranding on the shore.

The incident was also thought to have been the result of a storm.

However mass starfish strandings can also take place due to changing tides.
