Storms cause chaos in Dumbarton with High Street closed and Quay flooded

Motorists faced chaos in Dumbarton town centre after one storm left the High Street closed to cars while another blocked the diversion route due to flooding.

Storm Ciara left a building unsafe in the town’s High Street last Monday before Storm Dennis rolled in and left the quay underwater at the weekend.

These dramatic images show a taxi trying to negotiate the diversion route behind the town centre shops where vehicles were diverted to while the main thoroughfare was completely closed.

And efforts to repair the dangerous chimney were thwarted at the weekend due to the continued period of high winds and heavy rain with contractors unable to complete the work as a result.

A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said: “Due to the dangerous condition of a chimney, High Street, Dumbarton will be closed to vehicles between its north and south junction with Riverside Lane from 10 February for up to 21 days.

“Access for pedestrians will be maintained. Diversion route will be Riverside Lane.”

Storm Ciara first hit at the start of last week with heavy hail, sleet and rain showers as well as high winds.

Residents had a couple of days reprieve before Storm Dennis came in at the weekend to cause further chaos.

On Sunday, Aldi in Alexandria’s Bank Street was closed due to signage at the front of the store damaged in the strong winds.

Fire crews attended to set up a cordon around the area in order to ensure the safety of people in the vicinity.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.47pm on Sunday, February 16 to reports of a loose sign at a supermarket premises on Bank Street, Alexandria.

“Two fire appliances were mobilised to the scene, where crews established a cordon around the area, before the site was handed over to a maintenance team. Crews left at 3.44pm.”

And works on a railway bridge in Old Kilpatrick were also disrupted as a result of the strong winds and heavy rain.

The road was due to be closed until yesterday (Monday) however it is anticipated that work will now run onto the end of this week. A shuttle bus, which was eventually secured to ease the stress on villagers, will continue to operate in the meantime.

Meanwhile roadworks at Lomond Bridge at Balloch set to last for the majority of this year were due to get underway yesterday (Monday) as expected despite the impact of the storms.
