A new Translation Hub is launched today aimed at allowing Stormont departments and other public bodies to accommodate the use of Irish and Ulster Scots.
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey says the Hub, which will be based within the Department for Communities, will provide translation services for the nine Executive Departments, Arm’s Length Bodies, Local Government and Public Bodies.
She added: “I’m delighted to announce the launch of the Translation Hub. This is one of the commitments set out in the New Decade, New Approach document.
“The Hub will provide an important role in the translation and transcription services for Irish and Ulster-Scots.
“The inclusion of people and communities is at the heart of all we do. As the Minister with responsibility for the Irish and Ulster-Scots languages, I welcome the creation of this Translation Hub.”
Irish language group Conradh na Gaeilge welcomed the news.
President of the group, Dr Niall Comer said: “Conradh na Gaeilge welcomes this substantial announcement regarding the launch of the new Translations Hub.
"Conradh na Gaeilge has been calling for such a translations centre for a number of years, including in our 2017 Irish language Act Discussion Document; namely a centralised resource servicing the language and translation needs of Government departments, public bodies and local councils, all in a consistent, effective and efficient way.
“Conradh na Gaeilge will monitor the rollout of new Hub to ensure the highest standards of language and translation services are being delivered to communities going forward.”
