Stormont photos show building being constructed in 1920s

It may have been a lot quieter over the past two years due to the lack of an Executive, but Stormont is still as impressive looking as ever.

Now old photographs have been unearthed, from a photo album held by PRONI, which show the building being constructed between 1924 and 1927.

The present Stormont Estate was established by the Reverend John Cleland in the early 19th Century.

The Cleland family left in 1893, the demesne was let out but the tenant left and initial efforts to sell failed.

But, the newly-formed Northern Ireland Parliament was seeking a site for Parliament Buildings and it purchased the estate for £21,000 in 1921. This included 235 acres, 100 of which were woodland.
