Stormont announces more cash for education, health and infrastructure

Stormont will inject a further £18 million into health, education and infrastructure in an eleventh hour amendment to the budget.

In a statement released on Monday, Finance Minister Conor Murphy said the extra cash would be spent on urgent road repairs, dentist and doctor pay and education.

Of that, £10million will be allocated to education, £5million for doctor and dentist pay and health, and £3million for winter services, urgent street lighting and road repairs.

But there'll also be less money for capital projects next year.

There has been a £59million reduction in Financial Transaction Capital for 2019/20 and a £52million reduction in the Capital Budget, which has been deferred until 2020/21.

In his statement, Mr Murphy said changes by the Treasury would normally be known "well in advance" of this time of year but had come in late due to "unexpected additions ... offset by reductions".

He added: "In view of the late stage in this financial year the Executive has moved quickly to agree [to the changes]."
