Storm warning for heavy rain in Canberra

A severe weather warning has been issued for the region just days after strong winds and hail created havoc in Belconnen.

About 2000 households remain without power and some have been told by energy provider EvoEnergy this will be the case until Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for severe rainfall in the Central West Slopes and Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts.

Canberra is expected to receive up to 25 millimetres of rain on Thursday.

More storms are forecast for Friday and rainfall of between 25 and 35 millimetres is expected.

The weather warning comes after the severe storm damaged power lines and infrastructure as hail and strong winds brought down trees across the region.

More to come.
