Storm to hit Merseyside renamed as Met Office issues urgent weather warning

The name of the next storm on its way to the UK has been officially announced.

Named by the Spanish Met service , the storm will batter the UK with unruly winds and rain this weekend.

Most of the UK has been issued weather warnings by the Met Office for heavy rain and strong winds.

Merseyside has a yellow weather warning in place on Saturday and Sunday for wind.

The storm was supposed to be called Ellen, however because the name was first announced by the Spanish Met, the storm was named Jorge instead.

The Met office said: "A spell of strong winds is expected to move northeast across a large swathe of the UK through Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

"Gusts of 50-60 mph are likely quite widely, and especially in association with heavier showers across England and Wales during Saturday afternoon.

"More isolated gusts of 65-70 mph, particularly on coasts and other exposed areas, are probable."

What to expect from Storm Jorge:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves.
