Storm safety advice for animal owners facing fierce weekend weather

Dog owners are being advised on how to keep their pets calm with rain, hail and thunder due across the weekend.

The Dogs Trust has a list of warning signs to look out for and ways to manage the behaviour of family pets to ensure their safety.

A spokesperson for the charity said: " If the storm is disrupting your dog’s exercise routine, activities such as a toy filled with food so that they can use up some energy playing and ‘exploring’ for food, often work well.

"Games like this are also a great distraction from any unsettling sounds.

"If you are able to head out safely, always keep your dog on a lead in case they get frightened by any sudden noises.

"If you are near an area that may flood, be aware that flood water could contain raw sewage, and might be contaminated.

"Keep you and your pet out of it as the water could contain toxins, which could be dangerous to your pet if swallowed, and could remain on their coat if not bathed properly.

"Pet owners should know where their pets are at all times. If there is any risk to pets kept outside, ensure they have a safe and dry shelter, or if appropriate bring them indoors. They may be scared and unsure, and will need reassurance."

If you are able to safely walk your dog before the storm hits it will help.

The advice from Dogs trust for pet owners dealing with thunder, lightning and fireworks:

  • Feed your dog before the storm/fireworks as he may become unsettled and not want to eat during the fireworks.
  • Make sure your house and garden are secure during the storm/fireworks as fear may make your dog try to escape.
  • Try to settle your dog before the storm/fireworks start – if your dog is in familiar safe surroundings it will help him cope with the noise.
  • Provide a safe hiding place and make sure your dog has somewhere safe in his or her favourite room, perhaps under the table. Close the curtains, turn the lights on, and turn up the volume on your TV or radio to drown out the firework noises.
  • Don't punish your dog for cowering or reacting to the storm/fireworks as this will intensify his fear.
  • You should aim to remain relaxed and therefore provide a good role model to your dog when he is afraid. If your dog comes to you for comfort don't ignore him – interact with him calmly.
  • Don't leave your dog alone in the house during the storm/fireworks period – he may panic and this could result in an injury.
  • Keep your dog busy indoors – play games or enjoy some reward-based training to keep his mind off the noises. If he just wants to hide away then don't force him to come out of his hiding place, allow him to stay where he feels safe.
