Storm Mathis latest: Horrendous conditions incoming as storm off Irish coast is named by weather chiefs

A storm named Storm Mathis is set to batter the southwest of Ireland this evening with heavy rain and horrendous conditions incoming.

Met Eireann said that on Thursday evening scattered showers will give way to "persistent outbreaks of rain moving in from the southwest".

The area of low pressure that will pass near the south of the Irish coast has been named 'Storm Mathis' by weather chiefs in France.

The greatest impacts will be felt in France, but there could be winds of 70mph in parts of the UK along with heavy rain.

Irish weather expert Alan O'Reilly from Carlow weather said that Storm Mathis is set to bring up to 20mm of rain on higher ground.

He tweeted: "The rain associated with storm to the South of Ireland has arrived in the Southwest. The impressive looking system has been named #StormMathis by the French Met service.

"The rain from this system will bring over 10mm over the next 24 hours and over 20mm possible on higher ground. Rain clearing the Southwest tomorrow afternoon but late evening by time it clears Northeast."

Meanwhile, on Thursday night, the rain and drizzle in the south of the country will become heavy in the west of Ireland and will spread to all areas overnight.

Met Eireann said: "Remaining showers in the north will clear northwards early tonight, and outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the south will spread to all areas overnight, becoming heavy and persistent in the west later.

"Winds will be mainly light to moderate easterly or variable, but they will increase fresh to strong northwesterly in Munster overnight. Minimum temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees."
