Storm Malik to hit Scotland tomorrow with 80mph winds and 'danger to life' warning

Storm Malik is set to rage across Scotland this weekend as forecasters anticipate 80mph winds to batter the country.

The storm is expected to impact Denmark mostly - but as it travels eastwards, the effects will be felt in Scotland from Saturday.

Gale force winds and wet conditions will dominate the forecast across northern Scotland, with more adverse weather being felt in eastern parts of the country.

Winds could reach highs of up to 80mph in the most exposed coastal areas from tomorrow.

The Met Office has issued one amber warning and two yellow weather warnings across all of Scotland on Saturday ahead of Storm Malik passing through the country.

An amber yellow warning is in place for eastern and northeastern Scotland where the Met Office says Storm Malik will bring a period of very strong winds and disruption.

The yellow alerts cover swathes of Scotland and Northern Ireland and the worst of the weather could case 'dangerous waves' that could cause injuries and a 'danger to life'.

Blustery and wet conditions are likely to cause disruption to transport services, while drivers have been urged to take care on the roads.

Further warnings of high winds have been issued for most of Scotland on Sunday night through to midday on Monday.

This has been caused by a further low pressure system that could bring snowfall to parts of northwestern Scotland on Sunday.

WXCHARTS has predicted that around two and half inches could land in the Highlands on Sunday.

Met Office officials say that the weather warnings are likely to be reviewed over the weekend as developments become more certain.

Storm Malik was named by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) on Friday morning.

Chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “The impacts of Storm Malik are going to be greatest in Denmark on Sunday, but the track of the storm in the preceding hours means that the UK will be dealt a glancing blow as Malik moves eastwards on Saturday.

“For those in the north of the UK there will be high winds and rain on Saturday, with showers possibly turning wintry in the high ground in the north. The highest winds are expected in exposed coastal areas in the north and east of Scotland, but it will be a windy day for most.”

What to expect during Storm Malik

  • Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto susceptible sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
