Storm Lorenzo winds force Met Eireann to issue fresh Status Yellow wind warning

Eight counties were hit with a fresh wind warning on Friday morning as Storm Lorenzo continues to batter the west coast.

Met Eireann issued the Status Yellow wind alert for Kildare, Offaly, Westmeath, Galway, Mayo, Longford, Roscommon and Clare.

The weather chiefs issued the warning, as average wind speeds of up to 65km/h come in from the Atlantic. The caution is valid from 7am until 1pm on Friday.

A statement said: "Strong westerly winds persist for a time this morning, mean speeds 50 to 65 km/hr with higher gusts."

The national forecaster issued an updated warning as storm surges were set to cause coastal flooding and damage.

Galway, Mayo, Clare, Kerry and Limerick were hit with the orange warning, as gusts of up to 120km/h were expected to lash the west and southwest.

However, gusts hit weaker than predicted. The warning was valid from 6pm on Thursday until 6am on Friday.

Met Eireann said: "Southwesterly winds veering westerly will reach mean speeds 65 to 80km/h with gusts generally of 100 to 130km/h, higher in coastal regions. Storm surges will produce coastal flooding and damage."

The entire country was issued with a Status Yellow wind alert, which expired on Thursday evening, apart from Cork, Wexford, Tipperary and Waterford which were under a yellow alert until 6am on Friday.

It's believed around 4,000 homes and businesses are without power following the storm's arrival.

Around 1,200 people living in Knockaphunta, near Castlebar, Co Mayo, have no electricity.

Just over 1,100 in Kilcolgan, Co Galway are also without power, while 920 customers in the Clifden area are also affected.

An ESB spokesperson said: “We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible.”
