Storm Lorenzo to batter Ireland as 'danger to life' warning issued in the UK

A danger to life warning has been issued in the UK as Storm Lorenzo is set to batter Ireland with 120km/h winds.

The Met Office issued a warning as the ex-hurricane continued to move across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Environment Agency issued 12 flood warnings and 47 flood alerts across England.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has issued four weather warnings, while the cyclone approaches Ireland.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and flooding will hit some parts of the country.

The national forecaster has warned of high seas and coastal flooding, with the west to bear the brunt of Lorenzo's winds.

A Status Orange wind alert will be in place for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Kerry and Limerick from 6pm on Thursday until 3am on Friday.

Wind gusts will be slightly weaker than expected, but storm surges may cause damage in these counties.

A warning said: "Southwesterly winds veering westerly will reach mean speeds 60 to 80km/h with gusts generally of 100 to 120km/h, higher in coastal regions."

A nationwide Status Yellow wind warning is in place from 9am until 6pm on Thursday.

Met Eireann says 100km/h gusts may have “disruptive impacts” across the country.

The weather chiefs have also issued a nationwide rainfall warning.

Leinster, Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal will be under a yellow alert.

The caution for these 20 counties will be valid from 9am on Thursday until 6am on Friday.

And on Thursday morning, Met Eireann also issued a Status Yellow wind warning for Wexford, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford. The alert is valid from 6pm on Thursday until 6am on Friday.

Met Eireann cautioned: "Southwesterly winds of mean speeds 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 100km/h."
