Storm Kyle to bring winds of 70mph and rain as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

Gusts of strong winds and rain are set to batter parts of the country this week, as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning.

Cornwall, coastal Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to be hit the worst by tropical Storm Kyle in the coming days.

The most intense winds speeds will reach up to 70mph, with disruption to travel and power supplies expected.

The Met Office has put the yellow weather warning in wind in place from 8pm on Wednesday until midnight on Thursday, The Mirror reports.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said that by Wednesday "it is set to get unusually windy for the time of year".

Grahame Madge from the Met Office told the Mirror: "Storm Kyle was tropical cyclone but has since decayed - however the moist air that swept though is invigorating our weather patterns.

"The most intense wind speeds will be up to 70mph - which for August is very unseasonable.

"A summer storm presents more challenges as more people are out and trees have more foliage and are likely to be more resistant.

"Elsewhere there's going to be a good mix of rain - the atmosphere is quite turbulent."

The Met Office warns: "A spell of strong southerly winds are expected to develop on Wednesday night across southwest England and move north across western parts of Wales, southwest Scotland and all of Northern Ireland during the early hours of Thursday.

"Although there is some uncertainty in the track of the low, gusts of 65mph are possible inland, with 70mph or more possible around coasts and hills.

"Whilst winds may temporarily ease during Thursday morning, a band of heavy rain is likely to move east during Thursday afternoon and evening accompanied by some locally squally winds."
