Ever since it was consumed as a medicinal drink in China around 2700 BC, tea has been part of rituals, social gatherings and global customs. Whether it’s a quick cuppa at the kitchen table, a lavish high tea, an Australian billy tea or an Asian tea-drinking ceremony, the drink has played an important role in international trade.
Storm in a Teacup looks at a variety of these traditions. Through early paintings and contemporary responses, the exhibition eplores the role of the humble tea cup across about 50 different works, including painting, photography, sculpture and installation.
