PHITSANULOK: A strong summer storm lashed Muang district on Tuesday night, causing widespread damage and a car crash that killed one person and injured five others.

The storm moved in about 11pm, bringing heavy rain and strong winds and lasting about an hour.

A power transformer exploded near Ton Wa intersection in front of the Tesco Lotus department store, Tha Thong branch, blacking-out a large section of the town.

The 105-metre tall antenna of a radio station operated by the Meteorological Department fell to the ground, crushing the station roof and adjacent houses in tambon Tha Pho.

Shortly after midnight, a Toyota Vigo pickup skidded off the rain soaked Phitsanulok-Sukhothai road and crashed into a power pole.

The pickup was carrying six women travelling from Bangkok to Krong Krai Lat district of Sukhothai province.

One of them, a middle-aged woman in the back seat of the cab, was killed. The five others were all injured, some of them seriously.
