Storm Francis: Residents rescued from flood hit homes as heavy downpours wreak havoc across NI

Residents have had to be rescued from their homes as Storm Francis hit Northern Ireland today.

The Shimna River in Co Down burst free of its banks on Tuesday morning as heavy downpours caused widespread disruption.

Emergency services have been on hand to deal with the chaos, with flooding reported across several areas.

It comes as the Met Office has set a yellow weather warning for rain, covering the whole of the county. It is in place until Wednesday (August 26) at 6am.

In Co Down locals battled to protect their homes and belongings, with the town of Newcastle among the worst-hit areas.

Flooding was also reported in parts of Co Derry and Co Antrim, including Belfast.

Fire crews were also responded to an incident at a property in Maghera where a family was reported "trapped".

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said the rescue mission was 'currently ongoing'.

They said: "Our Specialist Rescue Team, Flood Response Teams and local Crews are in attendance."

"A number of people have been rescued from their homes and the response is ongoing.

“Our Flood Response Team and 2 Fire Crews are also in attendance at a flooding incident in Maghera to help rescue a number of people who are trapped in their home.

"That incident is also ongoing."

They added: “We are reminding the public that in the event of serious flooding to phone the NI Flooding Incident Line on 0300 2000 100.  If there is a risk to life dial 999 immediately and we will respond.

“We want to reassure the public we are prepared and well-rehearsed in terms of our contingency planning in readiness for the strong possibility of flooding in parts of Northern Ireland across the afternoon and we have redeployed resources accordingly.

“We are working closely with our colleagues in the PSNI, Coastguard and other statutory agencies right across Northern Ireland to assist members of the public."
