Storm Francis Ireland forecast: Met Eireann issue new Status Orange 'flash flood' warning

Met Eireann have issued a new Status Orange warning for rainfall and possible "flash flooding" as Storm Francis is set to batter Ireland.

The alert for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal is in place until 6pm on Tuesday.

It reads: "Further intense rainfall associated with Storm Francis is expected at times today. This combined with overnight accumulations will lead to some flash flooding.

"This rainfall will further elevate river levels and may result in river flooding also."

While a Status Yellow warning is in force for the remainder of the country until 9pm this evening.

A Yellow wind alert is also in place for Munster, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Wicklow until 9pm.

It reads: "Very windy or stormy conditions are expected on Tuesday as Storm Francis crosses Ireland. Southwest winds veering westerly, reaching mean speeds of 55 to 65km/h, will bring widespread gusts of 90 to 110km/h (and possibly higher in exposed areas).."

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Wet and windy today, as Storm Francis tracks eastwards across Ireland. Spells of rain will continue to affect most parts of the country through the day, with the heaviest and most persistent rain in Connacht and Ulster, leading to flooding.

"It will be driest in Munster and south Leinster, with scattered blustery showers, and these drier conditions will gradually extend northwards through the evening as the persistent rain becomes mainly confined to Ulster.

"There will be strong winds today, variable in direction as the centre of Storm Francis tracks across the country. Winds will be strongest in the south and east and will reach gale force at times on all coasts. Afternoon temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees.

"Tomorrow, there will be sunny spells and well scattered showers. Showers will become more frequent and heavy at times later in the day, particularly in northern areas. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light to moderate westerly or variable breezes."

However there is some good news, as it is expected to turn drier with some sunny spells possible later this week.

A forecaster added: "There will be widespread showers on Thursday, heavy and possibly thundery at times. Showers could also merge into longer spells of rain in places. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with light south to southeast breezes. '

"Showers will continue across the southern half of the country on Thursday night, with northern areas becoming mostly dry with some clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

"Friday will see further showers, most frequent and heaviest across the eastern half of the country. Highest temperatures of 13 to 18 degrees, coolest in northern areas as winds turn to a northerly direction.

"It will be quite breezy near coasts, with strong northerly winds, mostly moderate elsewhere. Showers will die out from most areas on Friday night, although there may be a few light showers in the northwest. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees.

"The weekend is looking mostly dry with sunny spells, although a few showers are likely in the west and northwest. Highest temperatures on both days of 14 to 17 degrees, with light to moderate north to northwest breezes."
