Storm Francis: Flood warning issued for area of Greater Manchester this evening

A flood warning has been issued for homes and businesses in an area of Greater Manchester.

Forecasters say river levels are expected to rise at Honksford Brook in Mosley Common, Wigan, on Tuesday evening.

As Storm Francis batters the region, 'low lying land, roads and farmland' in the area could be at risk of flooding.

The warning covers an area of Mosley Common Road and Worsley Business Park between 5.30pm and 7pm.

With further rainfall predicted over the next 24 hours, the Environment Agency has warned that river levels in the area could reach as high as 1.1 metres.

In a statement on its website, it added: "We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels.

"Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation and avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses."

According to the Met Office, heavy rainfall is expected across Greater Manchester throughout the night.

A yellow weather warning for rain and wind has been issued for the region up until 6am tomorrow.
