Storm Eunice rips stable roof off animal sanctuary and blows rabbit hutches away completely

Winds of up to 90mph ripped through an animal rescue centre "like a chainsaw" during Storm Eunice, causing "devastation and destruction."

Greenacres Rescue in Haverfordwest found itself bearing the brunt of Storm Eunice - said to have been the worst of its kind in 30 years - as it caused widespread havoc across the country yesterday (Friday, February 18).

The west Wales charity took to Facebook to report how "at 10am the wind reached speeds that ripped through the centre like a chainsaw.

"Our static caravan, which is our main office, was completely torn apart" and "the stable's roof just disappeared, lifting and flying off."

Rabbit hutches and accommodation for the geese also "blew around the centre like they were dolls houses.

"We have never seen anything like it," a spokesperson added. "To be perfectly honest it’s miraculous someone wasn’t seriously hurt."

The post went on to praise the quick thinking of its staff and volunteers before describing the incident as a "serious set back" which has left them facing a repair bill of "tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage and weeks or months of inconvenience.

"We must be thankful that no person or animal was injured and all the rest is replaceable."

Staff at the centre also said they'd been buoyed by all the support and offers of help they'd received from members of the public.

The spokesperson added that, whilst the situation is being assessed by the insurance company, offers from anyone wishing to help raise funds to get the centre back on track as quickly as possible would be gratefully accepted.
