Storm Eunice debris smashes into windscreen and injures man at Switch Island

Switch Island is currently closed after debris hit a van windscreen, leaving a man injured.

Police confirmed they were called at just after 2.10pm to reports that debris had struck a vehicle at Switch Island/Dunningsbridge Road in Netherton.

A man inside the van was injured, but the severity of his injuries are unclear.

Photos of the scene show a silver van with damage to its windscreen and a large emergency services presence.

Police, fire and ambulance all attended and an eyewitness said a cordon was also in place.

The M58 is currently closed as a police investigation is underway and a spokesperson for National Highways said they expect it to be closed "for some time."

Switch Island incident (Liverpool Echo)

According to traffic management system Inrix, there is queuing traffic from junction 1 (Maghull Lane), Kirkby to the A59 (Switch Island) southbound, which is also closed.

Arriva bus services 300 and 310 are currently being diverted via Park Lane, Dunning Bridge Road, Copy Lane, Northern perimeter, Buckley Hill Road, Sefton Lane in both directions.

A spokesperson for Arriva said that "severe delays" were expected.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm officers are today, Friday, February 18, at the scene of a road traffic incident in Netherton.

"Officers were contacted at just after 2.10pm to reports that debris had struck a vehicle at Switch Island/Dunningsbridge Road.

"A male in the vehicle was injured and paramedics are currently at the scene.

"The M58 is in the process of being closed while the incident is dealt with.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area."
