Storm Ellen: Yellow wind warning in place for 18 counties as forecasters warn of 'severe gusts'

A Status Yellow alert has been issued for 18 counties as forecasters warn of further 'severe gusts' following Storm Ellen.

The warning is valid for all of Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo.

A Met Eireann forecaster cautioned: "It will become very windy this evening and tonight, with severe gusts likely. Some flooding likely also, especially in coastal areas."

The alert came into effect at 9pm last night and will expire at 8am today.

While the brunt of the storm was felt in Cork, Met Eireann has warned dangerous conditions are possible anywhere in the country today.

Met Eireann revealed: "Very windy today, with bright or sunny spells and scattered heavy showers, merging to give longer spells of rain at times, with a risk of thundery downpours and localised flooding.

"Maximum temperatures 16C to 19C, in strong and gusty southerly winds, reaching gale force at times in coastal areas."

A Status Red alert was issued for Cork yesterday as the storm tore through the county while Orange and Yellow warnings were in place for the rest of Ireland.

Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the country have been left without power after the summer storm wreaked havoc last night.

It's reported at least 195,000 homes and businesses are without power this morning due to Storm Ellen.

Cork, which was hit worst by the storm, has the bulk of power outages with 40,000 and Tipperary, Westmeath, Longford and Limerick are also affected.

ESB crews will be deployed again today to restore power.

Fallen trees are also creating problems for commuters, with trees down on the N25 between Youghal and Castlemartyr and N71 between Clonakilty and Bandon in Cork.

AA Roadwatch says there are also a number of trees down on the Bandon to Dunmanway Rd (R586) at Enniskean.

And Skibbereen and Bandon have been hit by severe flooding.

Trees on railway lines are also causing disruptions to rail services, with trains from Limerick and Cork to Heuston in Dublin delayed this morning.
