Storm Ellen: Three teens rescued after trying to surf Wicklow river on inflatable rings

Three teens on inflatable rings made a narrow escape after getting into difficulties in a river in Co Wicklow during Storm Ellen.

The reckless youths got into trouble after trying to surf in the Avonmore River at Rathdrum this afternoon.

They were saved after the gardai, ambulance service fire crews, mountain rescue swift water unit, and the coast guard helicopter raced to the scene of the incident.

Two weather warnings are currently in place as Storm Ellen has wreaked havoc across the country.

A Status Yellow wind and rainfall warning is in place as Ireland will be battered by “heavy squally downpours, flooding, thunderstorms, and damaging gusts”.

A spokesperson for Garda Siochana Wicklow said: “Gardaí, Ambulance service, Fire crews, Mountain Rescue Swift Water Unit and the Coast Guard helicopter were all deployed in a successful operation this afternoon to rescue three teenagers who got into difficulties while using the inflatable rings shown in the photo to surf in the Avonmore River at Rathdrum.

“All safe and well. Please be careful near coasts and rivers given the current weather and heavy rainfall.”
