Storm Ellen Ireland: Met Eireann issue nationwide Status Yellow warning ahead of 'heavy squally downpours'

Met Eireann have issued a nationwide Status Yellow rainfall warning ahead of "heavy squally downpours" and "thunderstorms."

A previous warning for 19 counties expired at 8am today but forecaster Jean Byrne revealed on Morning Ireland that other warnings were likely to follow due to ongoing bad weather.

A forecaster said: "Heavy squally downpours and thunderstorms will bring a risk of spot flooding at times today and tonight."

The alert is valid from 9am this morning until 5am on Friday.

A weather advisory also remains in place until 9pm on Friday as the country recovers from the brunt of Storm Ellen which lashed the south coast with ferocious winds last night.

Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses across the country have been left without power and flooding has hit many areas with fallen trees and debris blocking roads.

While the full force of the storm was felt in Cork, Met Eireann has warned dangerous conditions are possible anywhere in the country today.

A forecaster revealed: "Very windy today, with bright or sunny spells and scattered heavy showers, merging to give longer spells of rain at times, with a risk of thundery downpours and localised flooding.

"Maximum temperatures 16C to 19C, in strong and gusty southerly winds, reaching gale force at times in coastal areas."

Met Eireann said: "Unseasonably wet and very windy weather is expected from early Wednesday night until later Friday, with further rainfall and wind warnings likely.

"Strong winds at times may result in unsafe conditions and some disruption, especially over high ground, lakes and sea areas. There is also a risk of flooding."
