Storm Ellen: Incredible scenes as gale-force winds and surging tide push 4 tonne shipping container 50m down Dollymount Strand in Dublin

Storm Ellen battered the country over the past 24 hours - and its sheer force was in full effect on Dublin's Bull Island overnight.

Pure Magic, the water sports centre based on Clontarf, have a container on Dollymount Strand which they use as a base for paddle boarding and kitesurfing lessons.

The shop's manager Manon confirmed to Dublin Live that the 40 foot, four-tonne container had been carried a full 50 metres (164ft) by the gale force winds and surging tides caused by Storm Ellen in the past 24 hours

She added that the huge steel shipping can had been moved back to its original position on Bull Island this morning.

Talented videographer and Dublin Live super fan Gerry Murphy - the unofficial mayor of Bull Island - said he saw the container being moved back into position when he was there for a swim this morning.

'Mayor' Murphy said: "It was pushed more than 150ft from its original spot and turned sideways as well. I actually saw a JCB down there this morning straightening it out to make it passable for beachgoers."

Gerry said that the huge tide that came in had washed much of the beach away. He added that the Wooden Bridge had to be closed because waves were coming over the top of it, such was the high tide.

He added: "Just as I was leaving Bull Island this afternoon the beach was actually gone, such was the amoung of water coming in.

"I've never seen the beach disappear like that in all the years I've been coming here."

The storm culminating with a king tide today has led to erosion eating into the city's coasts, with locals in Portmarnock and Portrane in north Dublin both saying they'd seen a dramatic change to the shorelines there in the past 48 hours.

The weather for the next few days is set to improve slightly, with Met Eireann forecasting unsettled weather for Dublin this weekend which will still include a good dose of sunshine.

Now that Storm Ellen has passed, if you fancy giving either kitesurfing and or SUP (stand up paddle boarding) a try, head over to Pure Magic's Clontarf store or visit their website.

They also have an online store where you can pick up great deals on everything from wet suits to powerkites. You can also book lessons.
