Storm Ellen: 27-hour warning as 'severe and damaging' winds to batter Ireland

Met Eireann has issued three weather warnings, one lasting 27 hours, for Storm Ellen which will track over Ireland tonight and on Thursday.

The tempest will be "severe" bringing potentially "damaging winds" with heavy rain leading to a risk of spot flooding.

The national forecaster also warns: "Due to the combination of storm surge, spring tides and onshore winds there is a potential risk of coastal flooding."

There are three warnings in place for Ireland due to the storm, Dublin Live reports.

The first, and most severe, is a Status Red warning which is currently in place for just Co Cork, and will be in effect from 9pm until midnight on Wedneday.

The second is a Status Orange alert for Munster, Galway and Mayo, which will remain in place from 9pm tonight until 12pm Thursday.

The third is a nationwide Status Yellow wind warning which will be in place for 27 hours from Wednesday at 9pm until 23:59 on Thursday.

Met Eireann warn: "It will become very windy on Wednesday night and throughout the day on Thursday. Severe gusts are likely and there is a risk of some disruption.

"Due to the combination of storm surge, spring tides and onshore winds there is a potential risk of coastal flooding."

And the news doesn't get much better after that either - here's what Met Eireann are saying for today, tonight and the next few days:

Tonight: "Very windy and cloudy with some clear spells and a further spell of rain extending from the south as winds veer southerly and increase fresh to strong and gusty with near gales along coasts. Lowest temperatures of 11C to 14C."
