Storm Desmond: Carlisle United players offer to help with flood clear-up

Carlisle United captain Danny Grainger will lead efforts by the club’s players to help people affected by Storm Desmond in Cumbria.

The League One side were out of the flood-hit area, winning 5-0 in the FA Cup at Welling on Sunday. Almost 60,000 people in the North have been left without power and Carlisle, whose Brunton Park ground is under water, have offered to help.

The club tweeted after their victory: “Just speaking to club captain  @Dannyg31986 on the team bus. A lot of concern from the lads about all those affected by this weekend’s events up in Cumbria and the Borders.

“Every member of the squad has agreed that they want to help if at all possible so they have spoken to manager Keith Curle, and it has been agreed that we will all be available after training on Tuesday to help out in any way possible.”

A Jordan Rose header in stoppage time ensured Whitehawk of the National League South will be in the hat for Monday evening’s third round draw. The East Sussex side had trailed from the fifth minute at Dagenham, where Jamie Cureton, 40, put the home side ahead.

Non-league Forest Green, Chesham and Altrincham all went out to Football League sides. National League high-fliers Forest Green went down 1-0 to League Two leaders Oxford.

Altrincham were on the wrong end of some late drama as League One side Colchester claimed a  3-2 success at home. And Chesham suffered a 4-0 defeat against cup specialists Bradford.

League Two Exeter City won 2-0 against Port Vale of the division above.
