Storm Dennis warnings from Met Office now stretch into next week

Weather warnings of snow, gales and torrential rain have now been issued by the Met Office from today into next week.

Warnings have been in place every day since last week thanks to Storm Ciara, and new alerts have been issued as Britain braces for Storm Dennis.

Today's warming is for heavy snow in parts of Scotland and on Friday that will be replaced by a yellow warning of heavy rain in the same area.

Storm Dennis is forecast to hit on Saturday when three separate Met Office warnings and dozens of Environment Agency flood alerts will be in force.

The Met Office said: "Storm Dennis will bring strong winds over the weekend. Some disruption to travel is likely across parts of England and Wales."

What to expect

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities are affected by spray and/or large waves

The forecast reads: "Strong winds in association with Storm Dennis are expected on Saturday and Sunday across many parts of England and Wales. The strongest winds are likely to be on Saturday afternoon and evening, with a lull overnight, before increasing again during Sunday. Gusts of 50 mph are expected inland.

"Around the coasts, especially in the west and south, gusts of 60-70 mph are likely. The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain at times, leading to particularly poor driving conditions."

The whole of the UK will be blanketed in yellow warnings on Sunday with alerts for both wind and rain.

The Met Office says homes and business could be flooded, transport links cancelled, driving will become difficult and dangerous, communities could be cut off and there could be power cuts.

And an alert will stay in force on Monday - covering Scotland and Northern Ireland with high winds forecast.
