Storm Dennis to batter UK at the weekend with heavy rain and 60mph winds

Storm Ciara is still causing mischief in Edinburgh thanks to heavy snow, flooding - and . Heavy snow is also set to hit parts of the region by 2pm, with the hazardous weather expected to last until 9pm this evening.

However, if you thought it couldn't get much worse, the bad news is that Ciara's little brother Storm Dennis is following hot on her heels and is due to hit the country on Friday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning over the newly-named weather front, and forecasters have warned there's 'a chance of injuries and danger to life' due to the storm's very strong winds.

Gusts of up to 60mph are expected, the Met Office said, with heavy rain at times.

There is a yellow alert for rain in place for southern Scotland on Friday, with the Met Office saying that rain and snow melt across Midlothian and East Lothian may lead to some travel disruption.

Elsewhere in the UK, forecasters have warned of 'very strong winds and the potential for disruption' from lunchtime on Saturday until the early hours of Sunday.

"Gusts of 50 mph are expected widely inland, with around 60 mph in places.

"Around the coasts, especially in the west and south, gusts of 60-70 mph are likely.

The Met Office warned of 'a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris'.

Forecasters said buildings could be damaged and tiles blown from roofs.

Travel is expected to be disrupted as road rail, air and ferry services are all affected, and roads and bridges could be closed because of the winds.

The Met Office also warned of a chance of power cuts and mobile phone coverage disruption. Dennis is the fourth storm to be named by the Met Office since September last year.

The storm however is not currently predicted to be as severe as Storm Ciara.

A National Severe Weather Warning for wind has been issued for much of the UK.

Steve Ramsdale, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: "Another spell of very wet and windy weather is expected for Saturday.

"Although Storm Dennis is currently not expected to be as severe as Ciara, disruption is still likely.

"Our confidence in the forecast means we have been able to issue severe weather warnings well in advance, giving people time to prepare for potential impacts of the storm.

"With further warnings possible over the next few days people should keep up to date with the Met Office forecast using our website, app or by following us on social media."
