Storm Dennis takes out River Irwell bridge in Salford as heavy rain and strong winds hit the region

Storm Dennis has destroyed a bridge crossing the River Irwell in Salford.

Rising water levels appear to have caused the bridge to collapse, after Greater Manchester was hit with persistent heavy rainfall.

Footage shows extensive damage to the metal framework which has been left sprawled across the river, near Clifton.

It is believed the bridge had been carrying a sewer main.

Flood warnings have been in place across the region today after the UK was hit by Storm Dennis overnight.

An environment agency bosses urged people living around the catchment areas of the River Irwell to prepare for potential flooding.

Residents were advised to 'get belongings upstairs' and check on their neighbours.

Flooding from the Irwell last weekend hit Ramsbottom, Bury and Radcliffe - with the water level rising through Salford and into Manchester city centre.

Alerts have been in place across Sunday for the Lower River Irwell catchment and and Upper River Irwell catchment.

In Oldham, strong winds from the storm bought down a tree in a cemetery.

Photos taken on Sunday afternoon show a large tree that has uprooted and fallen across half a dozen graves in Chadderton.

There have also been reports of trees coming down across the region - including several in the Stockport area.

Roads around Marple and Poynton were also closed due to flooding.

Rochdale Road in the city centre was closed after a building was declared unsafe.

A yellow warning of rain is in place across Greater Manchester until 9pm on Sunday night.

A yellow warning of wind is in place in parts of north Manchester, including Bolton and Bury on Monday.
