Storm Dennis: Met Eireann issues new Status Orange warning for nine counties and updates nationwide alert

A Status Orange wind warning will be in place for nine counties on Sunday as Storm Dennis shows no sign of stopping.

Winds from the cyclone have been battering the country all day, with an orange alert already in place for Wexford and Waterford.

And Met Eireann says it's only going to get worse tomorrow, by issuing the new caution for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

The warning will be valid between 10am and 10pm on Sunday. Wind gusts as strong as 120km/h are expected to hit during that period.

A Status Yellow alert will be in place for those counties until then.

A Met Eireann weather warning said: "Southwest winds with mean speeds of 60 to 80 km/h with severe gusts of up to 120km/h, strongest on exposed hills and coasts, with a risk of coastal flooding."

Meanwhile, the weather chiefs have updated the yellow warning for the rest of the country.

A lesser wind caution will be valid for all of Leinster, as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford between 10am and 10pm on Sunday.

Met Eireann said: "Southwest winds with mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h, gusting 90 to 100km/h, stronger on exposed hills and coasts, with the slight risk of coastal flooding."

A forecaster added: "The effects of Storm Dennis will continue on Sunday.

What is Storm Dennis?

"A very windy day with stormy conditions in Atlantic coastal counties. Sunshine and widespread heavy squally showers, especially in the north and west, with a risk of hail and thunder.

"Some of the showers may turn wintry on higher ground. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees, but feeling colder in strong to gale force southwest winds, with severe and damaging gusts."
