Storm Dennis gales to batter Ireland as Met Eireann warns of 'very wet and windy' weekend

Winds from Storm Dennis may batter parts of Ireland on what's shaping up to be a very wet and windy weekend.

The low-pressure system is sweeping across the Atlantic and could hit Irish shores by Friday night.

While it's currently unclear how strong Dennis will hit, Met Eireann has warned that heavy rain and gale force winds are on the way.

Saturday will be cold and blustery, with a band of rain making its way eastwards later in the day.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A very wet and very windy start to Saturday in association with Storm Dennis.

Heavy rain is on the cards as Storm Dennis will be here by Friday (PA)

"Rain in all areas during the morning, heaviest in the west, clearing to blustery showers during the afternoon.

"Strong and gusty southerly winds veering southwesterly with gales on coasts.

"Another band of heavy rain crosses the country on Saturday night with southwesterly winds remaining strong to gale force. Lows of 2C to 5C."

It appears Sunday won't be much different, with heavy rain showers and strong gales being forecast.

The forecaster said: "A wet and windy start to Sunday, with rain giving way to blustery, heavy showers during the afternoon.

The Met Office in the UK has issued a "danger to life" warning ahead of the storm's arrival (PA)

"Showers will turn wintry over high ground. Very windy again on Sunday, strongest in the west with southwesterly gales or strong gales on coasts."

The Met Office in the UK has issued a "danger to life" warning ahead of the storm's arrival.

The forecaster's weather alert is valid for most of Wales and England from noon on Saturday.
