The Met Office has issued six weather warnings, including for freezing rain, ice and heavy snow, as forecasters warn of "danger to life" this weekend.
Met Eireann, the Irish weather service, named an area of westwards-moving low pressure Storm Deirdre on Friday night.
The severe weather conditions are expected to cause widespread travel disruption and power cuts as up to 40cm of snow may fall in parts.
Only the south east of England is not covered by either a yellow or amber warning, although forecasters say the area will still see some heavy rain.
