Storm Darcy has been named with strong gales and heavy snow forecast this weekend.
The Met Office has issued an amber snow warning for South East England as cold air moves across the UK.
Cold air from Russia and Eastern Europe will bring heavy snow to parts of Eastern England and Scotland.
Strong and bitter winds could lead to blizzard conditions as temperatures drop to below freezing in some places over the coming days.
Rain will turn to snow on Sunday as the cold air spills across the whole of the country.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: “The UK is in for a notably cold and snowy period over the next week, with very cold air in place over the whole of the UK by Sunday.

“Showers will see snow accumulating across eastern areas.
"Within the Amber warning area, more widespread snow is expected and we could see 5-10 cm of snow quite widely, with a chance that a few places could see 20 cm or more.
"With such severe weather around it’s important to keep up to date with the latest forecast.”
Forecasters have urged those affected by snow to be aware of 'some significant disruption to transport and utilities' as well as long delays or cancellations for transport.
Roads may also become blocked by deep snow with vehicles stranded.
By next week, temperatures will be struggling to get much above 0C in a number of areas, with some regions such as the Pennines and high parts of Scotland seeing several degrees below that.
Birmingham faces lows of minus 2C by Tuesday morning, while a strong easterly wind will make it feel many degrees below freezing in some parts, according to Met Office forecaster Steven Keates.
He said it will be "really unpleasant" to be outdoors, adding: "If you do have to go outside there are lots of layers required I think."
