Warnings have been issued over major disruption to travel as Storm Claudia brings heavy rain and flooding to Britain.
A yellow weather warning for rain came into force at 6am for a large part of England, including London, with the warning of treacherous road conditions with delays and cancellations expected on trains and buses.
Amber warnings for "persistent and heavy" rain come into force from noon on Friday until the end of the day and cover parts of Wales, the Midlands, the South West, the South East and east of England.
The slow-moving downpours mean "some areas could see up to a month's worth of rain in 24 hours" with up to 150mm of rain.
The Met Office said the weather may cause power cuts, travel disruption and damage to buildings. The Environment Agency has issued a number of flood warnings while the AA has told people to avoid road travel.
National Rail are warning passengers to check their entire journey before departing on Friday and Saturday amid widepsread expected disruption.

Environment Agency guidance
15:26 , Tom PlaceLet’s see what the Environment Agency are saying about Storm Claudia.
Joe Cuthbertson, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, has said: “Significant surface water and river flooding impacts are probable for parts of England on Friday, with significant river flooding likely continuing into Saturday.
“Ongoing impacts from rivers are possible across the weekend.
“Environment Agency teams are out on the ground, operating flood defences and supporting local authorities in responding to surface water flooding.
“We urge people not to drive though flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.
“People should search ‘check my flood risk’, get free flood warnings, and keep up to date with the latest situation at @EnvAgency on X.”

More from the Met Office
09:25 , Tom PlaceMet Office chief meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, has said that some areas could have up to a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours.
“Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding and contributing to the amber warnings we have issued.
“Within the amber warning areas, some could see in excess of 150mm accumulate during the event, with 60-80mm fairly widely.
“Gusty winds in the north-west of England and north-west Wales is an additional hazard, with 60-70mph gusts possible in exposed places.”
Why Claudia?
09:21 , Tom PlaceDespite the recent success of the Celebrity Traitors, Storm Claudia is not named after Ms Winkleman.
Storm Claudia was named by the Spanish Meteorological Agency, having already brought heavy rain and strong winds to Spain and Portugal before coming to our shores.
UK flooding
09:17 , Tom PlaceOutside of the capital, other areas of the UK have already been hit by floods due to the inclement weather.
Heavy rain has flooded train tracks between Exeter and Barnstaple, closing the line with disruption expected until Sunday evening.
Further significant flooding is expected across England today and through the weekend.
Looking pretty grim out there...

Flood risks?
09:01 , Tom PlaceThe worst of the forecasted weather hasn’t hit London...yet.
But when it does, which areas of the capital are most at risk of flooding?
See which areas could be most affected here.
Tube disruption
08:43 , Matt WattsAlthough not all weather-related - there are problems on the Tube network in London this morning.
There are severe delays on the Central line between White City and Epping / Hainault due to an earlier faulty train at Bethnal Green.
There is no service between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge all day to reduce the risk of damage to train wheels caused by significant leaf fall.
Elsewhere on the Overground there are severe delays between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction due to a signal failure at Kensington (Olympia).
Other than that there wre no problems reported by TfL on the Tube at the moment.
AA issues warning about roads
08:24 , Matt WattsThe AA has advised against travelling in the "hazardous weather", saying: "Safety comes first. Conditions may change quickly, so stay updated and make sure you're prepared before you travel."
It added: "Flood water can appear quickly, and even shallow water can be dangerous - never try to drive through it."
Rail operators say check before you travel
08:19 , Matt WattsNational Rail are warning passengers to check their route for dealys or cancellations before leaving on Friday amid widespread disruption.
Current weather related disruptions on the train network being highlighted by National Rail are here.
It says the forecast of bad weather may cause trains to be disrupted in different ways:
•Heavy rainfall can cause flooding that results in tracks being underwater and embankments being damaged
•Flooding can affect points, which allow trains to move from one line to another, and electrical systems
•Strong winds can blow trees into infrastructure, damaging the overhead lines that power electric trains
