Storm Ciara: Transatlantic flight diverts to Glasgow Airport after plane forced to abort landing at Manchester

A transatlantic flight was diverted to Glasgow from Manchester as Storm Ciara batters the UK.

The Virgin Atlantic flight VS78 from Barbados attempted to land at Manchester Airport twice but gale force winds meant the pilot was forced to fly to Scotland.

The 391 passengers and one child are now being brought back to Manchester via bus, the airline confirmed to Manchester Evening News.

Storm Ciara is causing problems for airlines as strong winds batter the UK.

A number of Easyjet and FlyBe flights to destinations including Bristol, Belfast, Paris and London have been cancelled from Glasgow Airport today.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said: “Due to adverse weather conditions at Manchester Airport on Sunday 9th February, VS78 from Barbados was diverted to Glasgow Airport.

“Bus transfers to Manchester Airport have been arranged for customers, so that they can complete their journeys.

“The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority and we’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"The latest advice for customers regarding Storm Ciara is available on our website.”
