Storm Ciara to hit Edinburgh and the Lothians with gale force winds this weekend

The last couple of days have seen some stunning skies over Edinburgh, which have had us dreaming of Spring - but that's all about to change.

The Met Office issued yellower weather warnings for strong wind across the entire country earlier this week but forecasters have now officially upgraded this to "Storm Ciara", which is set to roll into town this weekend.

While the day will start off bright and sunny on Saturday, strong winds will pick up on Saturday evening, at around 6pm, and are set to last throughout Sunday.

In a tweet the Met Office said: "#Storm Ciara has been named and will bring very unsettled weather across the UK through Saturday night and Sunday."

Residents are being warned to expect travel disruption, with a chance there could be damage to bridges and buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.

There is also a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris when the bad weather strikes.

A statement from the Met Office reads: "Very strong winds are likely across much of the UK later Saturday and through Sunday.

"Gusts of 50 to 60mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts of 70, possibly 80 mph, around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west.

"Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills.

"Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with coastal impacts, especially in the west."
