Storm Ciara: Six flood warnings issued in Greater Manchester

Six flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency across Greater Manchester this morning.

with strong gusts and heavy rain across much of the morning, with people warned to stay indoors and only to travel if absolutely essential.

with an amber wind warning in force until 9pm on Sunday evening.

A yellow weather warning of rain has also been issued by the Met Office until 6pm.

Now, the Environment Agency has issued six flood warnings - meaning "flooding is expected, immediate action is required".

They are at:

  • Bessy Brook at Lostock, near Bolton - the Environment Agency says “river levels have risen at the Bessy Brook river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall”
  • River Irwell near Close Park - River levels have risen rapidly as a result of heavy rainfall and “there is a possibility” of flooding for Pioneer Mills, Close Park and Parkside Close
  • Hey Brook at Rochdale, properties adjacent to the watercourse - a possibility of flooding for properties at the north end of Park Road, All Saints Works, Heybrook School, and properties on Hector Ave
  • River Irwell at Bury Ground
  • River Irwell at Summerseat, Riverside
  • Daniel Street in Whitworth, near Rochdale

The Environment Agency has warned residents affected to:

  • turn off gas, water and electricity
  • move things upstairs or to safety
  • move family, pets and car to safety

There are also a number of flood warnings in place just outside of Greater Manchester, including the River Irwell at Strongsty and Chatterton, the Mersey Estuary at Warrington and in the Todmorden/Hebden Bridge areas.

Two flood alerts - meaning flooding "is possible" - are also in place for Greater Manchester, in the Upper River Irwell catchment area, covering Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall.

The second one covers the Lower River Irwell catchment area, covering the city centre and parts of Salford.
