Storm Ciara sends huge cranes spinning around and bends them 'like spaghetti'

Very strong winds from Storm Ciara have sent a huge crane at a building site spinning in the coastal town of Worthing, while another was left “bent over like spaghetti” in London.

Footage of the yellow crane in West Sussex showed the crane, located above a 141-home development on the seafront, rotating around in 41mph gusts.

Sussex Police said they received “a number of reports” about the crane but reassured the public there was no cause for concern.

“Sussex Police have been in contact with the developers and the cranes safety mechanism is designed to let it move in the wind,” they said in a tweet.

In London, a local resident in Stanmore shared a photo of a crane that was folded over on itself “like it’s made of spaghetti”.

Lindsey Wells, 36, said: “(It) looks like it’s made of spaghetti. It’s lucky it wasn’t during the week, as it’s a very busy, big development.”

Storm Ciara has wreaked havoc across the UK, disrupting numerous modes of transport and causing flooding throughout the country.

Over 190 flood warnings and around 170 flood alerts remain in place as more heavy rain and winds are expected. The Met Office also warned of hail and thunder as well as gusts over 80mph on Sunday evening.
