Storm Ciara: Pictures show flooding at Renfrew Ferry and Govan as River Clyde bursts its banks

The Renfrew Ferry was forced to cancel its services after the River Clyde burst its banks this afternoon.

Pictures show the road submerged in water as the firm claim the river was unsafe to cross due to the high tide.

They posted on Twitter: "The ferry is off for the rest of the day. The tide is way up on the road still but it's turned and now we have a wind against tide with very big waves. Its now unsafe to cross."

It follows a flood alert which was issued for Renfrew for this afternoon as Storm Ciara batters the UK.

The SEPA alert reads: “A combination of high tides and prevailing weather conditions means localised flooding of low lying areas in and around Ferry Road may be possible around the time of the high tide on Sunday at approximately 13:00 hours

"Access to nearby streets and properties is also likely to be impacted by flood water."

Another shocking picture showed the Clyde Walkway flooded in Govan earlier today, shared by Facebook page Glasgow Eyes.

The King George V Bridge in the city centre was flooded as the Glasgow Humane Society urged pedestrians to avoid the area, warning that the current was "exceptionally strong."

Glasgow is expected to be hit with snow from tomorrow according to the Met Office – with both weather warnings in place for wind and snow on Monday and Tuesday.

A third weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for Wednesday, taking in the majority of Scotland.

The Met Office statement reads: "Further snow showers are likely on Wednesday morning. These are likely to lead to further accumulations of a few cm of snow over ground above around 150 metres. Any snow accumulations over lower ground are likely to be temporary. Icy surfaces will be an additional hazard."

Here is what the Met Office is warning us to expect:

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
