Storm Ciara: Met Eireann issues two weather warnings for Ireland as 'damaging gusts' and 'wintry showers' to hit

Met Eireann has issued two separate weather warnings for the whole of Ireland as Storm Ciara is set to hit the country.

The National Forecaster has put in place a status yellow wind and rainfall warning ahead of this weekend.

The wind warning will see southerly winds strengthening during Saturday with mean speeds of 50-65km/h and gusts of 90-110km/h.

On Sunday, Storm Ciara - which was named by the UK Met Office - will "produce very strong winds over Ireland on Sunday with a risk of damaging gusts" according to Met Eireann.

They added: "Over the weekend the combination of Spring Tides and high seas as well as stormy conditions will result in an elevated risk of coastal flooding especially along southern, western and northwestern coasts."

That warning is in place from Saturday 9am until the end of Sunday.

The status yellow rainfall warning will see a "spell of heavy rain" that will spread eastwards across the country on Saturday with 20-40mm expected, highest in the west and northwest.

On Sunday, another spell of heavy rain will clear to make way for wintry showers.

Flooding in Skerries

Met Eireann added: "There will be a risk of localised flooding this weekend, especially over the western half of the country."

That warning is valid from Saturday at 12am until Sunday afternoon at 3pm.
